In the movie, Tula grew up in a Greek family, surrounded only by and interacting only with Greeks. She went to Greek school, ate Greek food and performed Greek dances. Her family owned a Greek diner, had large Greek dinners with family and expected their children to grow up, marry a Greek spouse and have lots of Greek children, Tula was always a little embarrassed of how extremely Greek her family was, thinking that they were so different from the majority of the population. Finally, at the age of thirty, she found the courage to explore outside the Greek culture. She met a man named Ian, who was not Greek, and they began dating, although she knew that her family would disapprove. Despite struggling with the familys disapproval, Tula and Ian had a very good relationship. They had a good relationship because they were willing to learn about each others backgrounds. As a teacher, I believe that children should begin to learn about other ways of life and be in diversified sett ings starting a t a young age so that they will be willing to interact with and learn more about others as they get older. John Tylers Presidency and the Tyler Precedent John Tyler, the first vice president to finish the term of a president who had died in office, established a pattern in 1841 that would be followed for more than a century. The Constitution was not entirely clear about what would happen if a president died. And when William Henry Harrison died in the White House on April 4, 1841, some in the government believed his vice president would only become an acting president whose decisions would need the approval of Harrisons cabinet. In the controversial election of 1800, when Jefferson became president, Aaron Burr became vice president. Burr is the best-known vice president of the early 1800s, though he is mainly remembered for killing Alexander Hamilton in a duel while vice president. Some vice presidents took the jobs one defined duty, presiding over the Senate, quite seriously. Others were said to hardly care about it. Martin Van Buren’s vice president, Richard Mentor Johnson, had a very relaxed view of the job. He owned a tavern in his home state of Kentucky, and while vice president he took a lengthy leave of absence from Washington to go home and run his tavern. The man who followed Johnson in the office, John Tyler, became the first vice president to show how important the person in the job could become. Death of a President John Tyler had started his political career as a Jeffersonian Republican, serving in the Virginia legislature and as the state’s governor. He eventually was elected to the US Senate, and when he became an opponent of Andrew Jackson’s policies he resigned his Senate seat in 1836 and switched parties, becoming a Whig. Tyler was tapped as the running mate of Whig candidate William Henry Harrison in 1840. The legendary â€Å"Log Cabin and Hard Cider† campaign was fairly free of issues, and Tyler’s name was featured in the legendary campaign slogan, â€Å"Tippecanoe and Tyler Too!† Harrison was elected, and caught a cold at his inauguration while delivering a lengthy inaugural address in very bad weather. His illness developed into pneumonia, and died on April 4, 1841, a month after taking office. Vice president John Tyler, at home in Virginia and unaware of the seriousness of the presidents illness, was informed that the president had died. The Constitution Was Unclear Tyler returned to Washington, believing he was the president of the United States. But he was informed that the Constitution wasnt precisely clear about that. The relevant wording in the Constitution, in Article II, section 1, said: â€Å"In case of removal of the President from office, or of his death, or inability to discharge the powers and duties of said office, the same shall devolve on the Vice President†¦Ã¢â‚¬  The question arose: what did the framers mean by the word â€Å"same†? Did it mean the presidency itself, or merely duties of the office? In other words, in the event of a president’s death, would the vice president become an acting president, and not actually the president? Back in Washington, Tyler found himself being referred to as â€Å"the vice president, acting as president.† Critics referred to him as â€Å"His Accidency.† Tyler, who was staying at a Washington hotel (there was no vice presidential residence until modern times), summoned Harrison’s cabinet. The cabinet informed Tyler that he was not actually the president, and any decisions he would make in office would have to be approved by them. John Tyler Held His Ground â€Å"I beg your pardon, gentlemen,† Tyler said. â€Å"I am sure I am very glad to have in my cabinet such able statesmen as you have proved yourselves to be, and I shall be pleased to avail myself of your counsel and advice, but I can never consent to being dictated to as to what I shall or shall not do. I, as president, will be responsible for my administration. I hope to have your cooperation in carrying out its measures. So long as you see fit to do this I shall be glad to have you with me. When you think otherwise, your resignations will be accepted.† Tyler thus claimed the full powers of the presidency. And the members of his cabinet backed down from their threat. A compromise suggested by Daniel Webster, the secretary of state, was that Tyler would take the oath of office, and would then be the president. After the oath was administered, on April 6, 1841, all the officers of the government accepted that Tyler was the president and possessed the full powers of the office. The taking of the oath thus came to be seen as the moment when a vice president becomes president. Tylers Rough Term In Office A headstrong individual, Tyler clashed mightily with the Congress and with his own cabinet, and his single term in office was very rocky. Tyler’s cabinet changed several times. And he became estranged from the Whigs and was essentially a president without a party. His one noteworthy achievement as president would have been the annexation of Texas, but the Senate, out of spite, delayed that until the next president, James K. Polk, could take credit for it. The Tyler Precedent Was Established The presidency of John Tyler was most significant for the way it began. By establishing the â€Å"Tyler Precedent,† he ensured that future vice presidents would not become acting presidents with restricted authority. Also, it feels good to learn that you have an audience who can appreciate your writing skills or your written pieces of work. This gives me the strength to write even better. However, I have encountered disheartening experiences where I learnt that, as an international student, I cannot get employment in the U.S. I have always admired living and working in America when I complete my education. However, this destroys my morale and further chips away at my abilities. Words, language, and written communication form distinctive parts of my life. Particularly, I use words to express my ideas and views by constructing sentences and expressions.

Bush's War On Terror and the Erosion of Civil Liberties Nearly all the amendments in the Bill of Rights have been reduced since the beginning of the war. The fourth through eighth amendments have been especially hit hard by this â€Å"war.† Search & seizure, due process, a speedy and public trial with a jury, and cruel & unusual punishment have all been disregarded as part of the current administration’s policy. The â€Å"War On Terror† has effectively eroded the civil liberties that Americans fought centuries for. Through the passing of the USA PATRIOT Act, the government can now search a â€Å"suspected† terrorist’s property without their knowledge and even without a warrant. Although this could be a well-needed exception to warrants, as it is the same way drug dealers and organized crime offenders have been investigated, identifying a â€Å"suspected† terrorist is not nearly as easy as an active criminal. As shown by the events of September 11, the terrorists that hijacked the planes were part of a â€Å"sleeper cell† which stays dormant until tipped off by somebody above them in the organization....

Mystery and suspense Essay

In his essay I am going to show how the writers build up mystery and suspense by looking at four short stories that have been written by † Guy de Maupasant, Edgar Allan Poe and Charles dickens†. In the fist short story I read † a vendetta† what happens is an old lady lives with her so in a little town and one night the son gets killed by a man called Nicolas ravioli then the mum who is a widow and only has the sons dog as a friend. She keeps shut up with the body and then she swears vengeance on to the body. But for months she cant think of anything but then one night she thinks of it she trains the dog to be a killer and makes it bite the neck of the victim then she takes the dog to were the killer lives and the dog kills him on her command. In the second story â€Å"the necklace† it is about a girl which dreams of being rich and have bountiful clothes but she is from a poor family so she marries a civil servant one day he comes home with tickets to a fancy ball at his work but she don’t want to go because she would have nothing to wear so he gives here 400 francs to bye a dress so she goes out and byes the best dress she can find then she has nothing to wear as jewelry so she goes to her rich friend and she lends her a bountiful necklace she goes to the ball and has the best night of there life but than when she gets home she finds she has lost the necklace the they have to replace it for a lot of money even thou they are very poor so she replaces it and has to work 10 long years to pay for it then she talks to her friend and tells her all that has happened and she finds out that it was a fake. In the third essay â€Å"the tell tale heart† there is a man that tells a story about a man who has a problem his boss has and evil eye and this eye really bugs him so he spy’s on him every night and then one night he goes in and kills the old man with the evil eye then he cuts up the man and he berries him under the floor boards then some police inspectors come around and he sits right above the body and then as time goes on he hears the heart of the old man but it is his own then he goes mad and he admits to killing him. In the fourth story † a confession found in a prison† is a story about a man that has a wife his wife’s sister is married to his brother and his wife’s sister has and evil look but one day she has a son and she dyes on holiday then his brother dies so they take in the child but the kid has got the same evil look passed down by the mother so he gets really bugged by it so one day when his wife goes on holiday the man kills the child and berries him in the back garden then he puts grass over him then some police come around and they talk to him in the garden he sits right above the body then the tell him they have some dogs to find the child then the dogs come running in and start sniffing around the ground where he is sitting then they make him move and they dg up he body then he admits it and gets put into prison. In the first story the best bit of suspense is when the lady is trying to teach the dog how to kill. The best bit of suspense in the second story is when they find out that she has gone and lost the necklace. The best bit of suspense in the third story is when he keeps going in at night and looking at the old man when he sleeps. The best bit of suspense in the fourth story is when he finds out that the little child has got the stare that his mum has. I think the best bit of suspense in all of the stories is in last story is that when he berries the body and the gardeners come and put grass on top of the body and he thinks that they will find the body. In the end I think all of the stories have lots of suspense in them but vendetta was my favorite because it has suspense murder in it and they are the types of stories that I like. I think they are all very good and they all show mystery and suspense.
